What does it stand for by itself?
Because, a watch is a sign. But it's made of many other signs (parts of the watch). Then it goes until the smallest component of matter which is atom.
What does atom/universe/god signify? Or, what does soul/prayers/love signify? And, do they always signify the same thing(s)? For instance, flirting. It could be because one needs temporary entertainment, or needs to get laid, or want to fall in love.
There's no universal truth/definition and no definite signification.
