Maupassant: One feels like touching something he described with two or three adjectives. Love, death.. one feels like tasting it, feeling it. It's right in front of the eye in an ultra-mili-split-second. He mixes in an evil trait to most things. There's not a single happy, positive description.

Diderot: He's bending the untruthfulness, the improperness of human relationships so much that, we can't believe a single word of a character at any rate.
